Services and Utilities

The area is serviced by a number of third party utilities.  
  • Electricity is provided by either EQUS or Fortis
  • Natural Gas is provide by either ATCO, Forty Mile Gas Coop, or Chin Coulee Gas Coop
  • Rural Water Coops operating with the County of Forty Mile include: Conquerville, Cherry Coulee, Southeast Alberta Water Coop, Chin Valley
Municipal Water Supply Systems exist in Burdett, Etzikom, Manyberries, Nemiscam, Orion, and Skiff.
Municipal Wastewater Systems exist in Burdett and Manyberries
Residential Garbage is collected in Burdett and Winnifred.
Residential Recycling is collected in Burdett Every other Wednesday. Schedule Attached. 


Within the County of Forty Mile No. 8, provision is made for the disposal of waste through two appointed Waste Services Commissions. North Forty Mile Regional Waste Management Services Commission offers service to the northern half of the County including the Bow Island, Burdett, Winnifred and Whitla areas, and the South Forty Waste Services Commission provides service to the southern part of the County including the Skiff, Foremost, Etzikom, Orion and Manyberries areas.

  • North Forty Mile Regional Waste Management Services Commission

    North Forty Mile Regional Waste Management Services Commission.


    The North Forty Mile Regional Waste Management Services Commission services the northern part of the County of Forty Mile No. 8 to provide recycling and waste transfer services. Inquiries should be directed to the landfill office at (403) 545-2618.  North Forty recently joined E-Waste and a trailer will soon be available for electronics recycling.


    Rates are posted below. Please call the landfill office for more information. Landfill is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM year round.


    The North Forty Mile Regional Landfill will accept Construction material waste at $55.00/tonne.

    Mattresses are recycled at a cost of $20.


    Please note:

    • North Forty Mile Regional Landfill accepts DEBIT, CASH or CHEQUES only. NO Credit Cards are accepted.
    • All haulers need to be weighed in and out.
    • The wood storage area has been closed, wood waste is still being accepted and will be placed with the other garbage. Trees must be under 4-foot lengths and under 16-inch diameter.
    • Bovine Waste is not accepted at the North Forty Mile Regional Landfill.
    • Concrete and Large Tree Stumps are not accepted at the North Forty Mile Regional Landfill.
    • Waste is not accepted from outside of the County of Forty Mile.
    • E WASTE – computers, stereos, tv, game consoles and speakers.
    • PAINT – pails, tins, aerosols, solvents, disinfectants, detergents, nail polish, perfumes, linseed oil, insecticides, and insect repellant and many more items.
    • TIRES - we accept all tires, with these exceptions not covered under Alberta recycling. Any type of tracks. This includes - skidoos, skid steers or large equipment. Forklift tires that either have a steel band inside or are solid. Foam filled tires or the foam itself. Debris such as belting, rubber hosing, tire tubes or any such thing that is not tires is deemed as waste.
    • PROPANE TANKS - bar bq, forklift, small camping stove tanks and fire extinguishers.
    • OIL - we have a large oil disposal tank for used oil, 45 gal drums, 5 gal pails, small jugs and oil filters.
    • We are accepting fridges, freezers and water coolers with a disposal fee of $20.00 per unit.

  • South Forty Waste Services Commission Detailed Information

    The South Forty Waste Services Commission Services the southern part of the County of Forty Mile No. 8 to provide recycling and waste transfer services. We would request that all individuals:


    Report to the Waste Transfer Site Operator before disposing garbage

    Arrive earlier to allow sufficient time to unload before closing time.

    RECHARGEABLE BATTERY AND CELLPHONE RECYCLING


    The South Forty Waste Services Commission is now accepting rechargeable batteries and cell phones for recycling. 


    Acceptable Items

    • Small, dry cell rechargeable batteries (Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd); Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH); Lithium Ion (Li-ion); Small Sealed Lead (Pb)
    • Rechargeable batteries from power cordless power tools, cellular phones, laptop computers, camcorders, two-way radios and remote control toys
    • All types of cell phones

    Non-Acceptable Items

    • ALKALINE, NON-RECHARGEABLE OR RECHARGEABLE WET CELL BATTERIES.
    • ALKALINE OR LITHIUM BATTERIES
    • BAG OR CORDLESS PHONES.

    FREON

    Freon removal service is available at Tirecraft in Foremost. Freon removal certification (sticker) is required before acceptance at the designated sites.


    CARDBOARD COLLECTION

    The Cardboard Trailer will be located at Skiff, Etzikom and Orion on a monthly basis as indicated in the chart below. Please note only clean, flattened, corrugated cardboard is accepted at all sites monthly. CHEMICAL BOXES must also be flattened and will, then, be treated as regular garbage.


    LITTERING AND HIGHWAYS AND DITCHES

    YOUR CO-OPERATION IS NEEDED: Due to an excessive amount of garbage coming off loads being hauled to the Foremost Transfer Station, it would be appreciated if loads could be secured to alleviate littering the highway and ditches.


    e-WASTE

    Effective February 1st, 2005, the South Forty Waste Services Commission is now accepting the following e-Waste at the Foremost Transfer Site:

    • Televisions
    • Computer Monitors (CRT and LCD)
    • CPU’s (including mouse, keyboard, cables, desktop computer speakers)
    • Laptop and notebook computers
    • Desktop printers and printer combinations (i.e. desktop printers with faxing and/or scanning capabilities
